What is it?
Implant dentistry is rapidly becoming the standard of care for replacing missing teeth. An implant is a titanium screw placed underneath the gums within the jawbone. An implant supports a restoration in the same manner that a root anchors a crown.

How does it work?
After an implant is placed into the jaw, the area around the implant heals in a way that results in bone growing between the threads of the screw. The implant essentially gets locked into place. This process takes 4-6 months depending on the location of the jaw.

How long do implants take?
Course of treatment can vary significantly from one person to the next. As long as there is enough bone and gum tissue to receive an implant, the process can take 4-6 months. If your surgeon or periodontist deems the quality or quantity of either the bone and/or gums insufficient, augmentation of the area may be necessary in the form of a graft before and implant can be placed. This can lengthen treatment anywhere from 2-6 months.

In most cases the patient must wait for the implant to get locked into the bone before a tooth can be placed on that implant. In the right situation, a tooth can be put on an implant the same day that implant is placed.

What role does LISDS play in implant dentistry?
At this time, implants are not placed at LI Sound Dental Solutions. Implants, are however restored in our office. This means that once an implant is placed, Dr. Kahn will add the tooth that sits on top of the implant. Teeth can be cemented on top of a connector piece between the tooth and the implant or they can be screwed directly into the implant.
